Who are you writing for? Why do you do it? Where does it come from? Margaret Atwood believes these are the three questions most often posed to writers, be it by readers, fellow writers or – perhaps most often – themselves. I have regularly found myself absorbed and sometimes overwhelmed by these questions; increasingly so this past year during the process of applying for an English Literature degree. No matter how innumerable and elaborate the answers supplied over the centuries are, I have always come back to a quotation by Charlotte Brontë:
“I’m just going to write because I cannot help it.”
So here you have it: a collection of things I just couldn’t help. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy!
